Tim Berners-Lee and This Website

This website is built around the idea of Linked-Data.  Tim Berners-Lee’s great insight is that Linked Data increases intelligence and understanding.   In fact, we learn by Comparison and Contrast. Comparison and Contrast is what enables us to form categories, the basic units of understanding anything.  On this Website I have linked articles which expand and delineate an original idea. Linked-Data is the perfect medium for this.

It should also be observed that The Bar llan Data Base is based on the idea of Linked-Data.  Anyone who has used The Bar Ilan Data Base knows what a boon it is to the advancement of Jewish Learning.

The downside of Linked-Data on the World Wide Web is that very little time is spent on one page. Deep concentration and intricate thought is lost. See the Bibliography in this section and in particular Nicholas Carr’s: What the Internet Is Doing to Our Minds. But since we cannot go back to what was before, we should at least understand the present in order that we can deal with it in an effective manner.

There is a idea among Librarians that the library of the future will be entirely electronic. In fact, there are University Libraries of Medicine that are entirely electronic.  But there are those who believe that if books in their physical form are abandoned, deep learning and understanding will be lost.  What it means for human progress is still an open question.
